About This Recipe

Happy Fourth of July! This Fourth of July Flag Cake recipe will help you celebrate.

This patriotic holiday was made for special food. You should grill some burgers, make potato salad, enjoy a root beer float, and have a special dessert decorated to look like a flag.

Use a cake mix for the Fourth of July Flag Cake, or make my Deep Dark Chocolate Cake or White Velvet Cake. Or use the brownie recipe from Crunchy Peanut Caramel Layered Bars, or Fabulous Mint Brownies.

I use two types of canned frosting on this cake (or brownie). The combination of cream cheese frosting and vanilla frosting is really good. The flag is made with berries: blueberries for the blue part of the flag, and strawberries or raspberries to make the stripes.

Fly your flag and have a great day!

Tips for the best Fourth of July Flag Cake:

  • Whatever cake or brownie you make, be sure it’s completely cooled before you start to frost it.
  • You really have to use the cream cheese and vanilla canned frostings. I usually don’t really like canned frosting, but in this recipe they are much better than homemade frosting.
  • Make sure you rinse the fruit before you use it for food safety reasons. And make sure the fruit is dry before you use it to top the cake or it will adversely affect the frosting.

Why this recipe works:

  • Fruit is the perfect topping for cake. It adds a sweet and fresh note.
  • The frosting will hold onto any juices the fruit release, so the cake won’t get soggy. The two types of frosting add interest and more flavor.
  • Have your kids use the fruit to decorate the cake. It’s good to get kids involved in kitchen activities.
  • You could use sliced strawberries instead of the raspberries if you prefer. Line them up end to end on the frosting.

Steps

1
Done

Make the cake. I like to use a chocolate cake for this recipe, but you can use any flavor you'd like. A boxed cake mix is just fine. Or you can make my chocolate or white cake.

2
Done

Cool the cake completely. Frost with the vanilla frosting. Then top with the cream cheese frosting.

3
Done

Use the fresh berries to decorate your cake. Take a picture and dig in!
