About This Recipe
Many unusual recipes have called themselves “salad.” This recipe for Snickers Salad (yes, it really does use the candy bar and it is called a salad), is quite peculiar and native to the Midwest. And it’s delicious, once you get used to the thought that you are eating candy as part of a “salad.” This is the sweetest salad recipe I own, other than 24 Hour Salad.
Tart apples and dried cranberries moderate the sweet flavor of the candy somewhat. Still, I think this recipe could easily be served as dessert! It may be a way to get your child to eat apples and dried cranberries.
I don’t know why this recipe became popular or even how it started. It just suddenly started appearing in deli departments in supermarkets and then spread over the internet. It is very delicious.
I really can’t think of a meal I would add this recipe to. I think it’s best for entertaining with a buffet or as something to take to a potluck party. That way people have the option of trying it.
You should try this recipe once in your life, just for entertainment and historical and cultural value. You may love it! I do!
Tips for the best Snickers Salad:
- Don’t cut the Snickers bars until just before you are going to add them to the pudding mixture. You will be amazed at how quickly they dry out.
- You really do have to use a wire whisk to stir the pudding mixture. It’s the only implement that ensures the pudding will be completely smooth.
- The best apples for this recipe really are the Granny Smith variety. You need that tartness and besides, they do not brown as quickly as other types.
Why this recipe works:
- The chewy sweetness of the candy really does complement the tart and crisp apples and chewy and tart dried cranberries. Without those last two ingredients the salad would be too sweet.
